The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) and members of the campus Emergency Management Team are closely monitoring the situation regarding the H1N1 influenza outbreak. We are working closely with local, state, and federal resources to obtain the most up-to-date information possible. Your primary sources of information regarding this influenza outbreak should be the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Web site and the State of Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene Web site.
Any UMB faculty, staff, and students who experience flu-like symptoms (click here for details) and believe they are in need of medical attention should contact their customary health care provider. UMB students and employees can also visit the walk-in clinic at University Family and Community Medicine at 29 S. Paca St. (between Redwood and Lombard streets) on a fee-for-service basis. The center accepts many employee health insurance plans. Its hours of operation are: Monday and Thursday from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.; Tuesday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
In the meantime, everyone should follow these common sense recommendations from health care professionals and agencies:
- If you have a fever and other flu-like symptoms, do not come to work or attend classes. See your health care provider if necessary. Do not return to work or attend classes until you have recovered.
- Cover your nose and mouth with your sleeve or a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Dispose of used tissues and then wash your hands.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
- Try to avoid close contact with sick people, as the influenza virus is spread person-to-person mainly through coughing or sneezing.
