A Bridge to Academic Excellence
  • Description:
    A Bridge to Academic Excellence (ABAE) is a community service project of the University of Maryland, Baltimore School of Pharmacy, formed for the purpose of improving educational, professional and social communities in the area by providing academic support to the future generation of professionals and uniting professional school organizations and area high school students through mentoring. The program was created and developed by a student at the School of Pharmacy.

    ABAE targets those high school students who wish to pursue professional careers but may have difficulty in their math, science and English classes. The program currently involves over 80 students from five Baltimore City and County high schools and over 60 tutors from the Schools of Pharmacy, Medicine, Law, Dentistry, Nursing and Social Work .

Baltimore Albert Schweitzer Fellowship Program
  • Description:
    The Baltimore Albert Schweitzer Fellows Program is a yearlong fellowship program open to all Baltimore students enrolled in a degree program in health and human-service fields including schools of medicine, nursing, public health, dentistry, pharmacy, social work, and law as well as such disciplines in health care administration and counseling psychology. Since its inception in 1999, fellows have come from the University of Maryland Schools of Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Social Work and Law and the College of Notre Dame Geriatric Program and the Johns Hopkins University, Schools of Public Health, Medicine, and Nursing. Fellows, who design their own service project and work with an existing community agency to address unmet needs, have worked to provide services ranging from developing college preparation and application programs for high school students, creating a computer center for the Hispanic population to learn how to use computers as well as English as a second language as well as legal service workshops on housing, employment, domestic violence, and benefits. In addition fellows have developed partnership programs with pregnant teens and HIV positive children and adolescents and currently are developing a free primary care clinic in East Baltimore. Each Schweitzer Fellow performs a community service project of at least 200 hours of direct service. and works in a small group to organize an outreach activity that may take the form of a public symposia or group service activity.

Maryland Poison Center
  • Description:
    The Maryland Poison Center has been a leader in providing poisoning and overdose care to all Marylanders since 1972. The center operates 24 hours a day, seven days per week and supplies information to the public for emergencies involving overdoses and toxic exposures to chemicals, plants, household products and drugs.

Maryland Regional Operations
  • Description:
    The Maryland/Regional Operations group was designed to communicate important information to the public regarding a variety of health topics of concern to people living in Maryland and surrounding communities. Current outreach programs have been developed around Lyme disease; however, future topics of interest may include other vector born diseases, such as bird flu or eastern equine encephalitis, or other exposure related illnesses such as lead poisoning.

Operation Diabetes
  • Description:
    Operation Diabetes is a diabetes screening and awareness campaign developed by APhA-ASP that is designed to increase awareness of diabetes. The goals of the committee are to help the public become more knowledgeable about the disease and to recognize the risk factors, signs and symptoms of pre-diabetes and diabetes. The Maryland chapter of APhA-ASP and the Operation Diabetes committee attend health fairs, as well as many other community events where we directly involve pharmacists and pharmacy students in diabetes management counseling and screening. It is our mission to help identify those who may not have been diagnosed in the past, help patients manage their diabetes, and ultimately prevent long-term complications of the disease.

Operation Heartburn
  • Description:
    An initiative of the American Pharmacist Association, Operation Heartburn Awareness strives to inform local residents about the severity of heartburn and keys to overcoming it. The program provides heartburn information and screening to persons in the Baltimore metropolitan area. Services are delivered through community and health fairs as well as local pharmacies and nursing homes.

Operation Immunization
  • Description:
    Operation Immunization is an organization of pharmacy students who educate the public about immunizations, including why they are important and the time scheduling of when a person should receive which immunizations. They provide Immunization Record Cards to those who are interested, and promote overall public health with regards to infectious diseases. They also assist in pharmacy run influenza immunization clinics and are able to provide influenza immunizations to adults, under licensed pharmacist supervision.

Student Committee on Drug Abuse Education (SCODAE)
  • Description:
    The Student Committee on Drug Abuse Education (SCODAE) is a voluntary organization made up of University of Maryland pharmacy students. This organization receives guidance from faculty members at the University of Maryland Office of Substance Abuse Studies. SCODAE members teach drug and alcohol education to audiences of middle school children, parents, and education professionals throughout Maryland. The SCODAE presentations provide accurate and unbiased drug and alcohol information in order to prevent abuse and addiction within the community. Philosophy ~ In a drug-oriented society, information on the pharmacology of drugs and alcohol is a basic educational need. Drug & Alcohol Education Programs SCODAE 5-Day Program Inter-Generational Insights Program SCODAE speakers address more than 3,000 individuals annually. Students also assist the Office of Substance Abuse Studies in publishing PharmAlert, a national newsletter on psychoactive drugs, drug abuse, and treatment options.

The Peter Lamy Center
  • Description:
    The Peter Lamy Center is dedicated to improving drug therapy for aging adults through innovative research, education, and clinical initiatives. Our mission is to improve the outcomes of pharmaceutical care for elderly patients by addressing and evaluating therapeutic interventions and drug policies through a combination of scientific knowledge and practical application. We also provide students, practitioners, and the elderly with up-to-date and accessible information on the best practices in geriatric pharmacotherapy through educational programs and the production and distribution of patient/provider education materials.

University of Maryland Drug Information Service (UMDI)
  • Description:
    UMDI is a service provided by the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy for the purpose of providing comprehensive medical information to not only contract affiliated institutions, but also to the general public. The UMDI also participates in an ongoing Internet Drug Information Service, which provides WWW users the ability to submit questions to qualified, trained, pharmacy staff. These questions are not limited in any way to geographic region or subject. The UMDI answers each question on an individual basis, usually within 3 business days, many within hours.

University of Maryland, Baltimore Outreach Council
  • Description:
    The Council has initially partnered with select community schools in West Baltimore -- Vivien T. Thomas High School, Diggs-Johnson Middle School, and George Washington Elementary School to help meet identified needs of children and their families.

    The Council:

    Assists the schools with navigating the extensive network of UMB outreach resources available to enrich the childrens experiences.

    Serves as the primary point of contact to support each community schools action plan (developed by the school coordinator based on an annual assessment of needs and resources).

    Encourages interdisciplinary collaboration within UMB to better leverage and link campus outreach services with identified needs.

    Mobilizes campus resources to support local community schools.

    Determines appropriate ways to demonstrate the success of targeted outreach efforts.

    Expands partnerships to other community schools, as resources permit.

University of Maryland, Baltimore: Vivien T. Thomas Medical Arts Academy Summer Research Program
  • Description:
    Sponsored by the University of Maryland, Baltimore, this paid summer research program encourages students from Vivian T. Thomas Medical Arts Academy to consider a career as a health professional or scientist. Students work 40 hours each week with faculty and graduate research assistants in biomedical research labs to gain direct work experience and mentoring. Throughout the internship, students participate in weekly workshops and campus tours, where they meet with faculty and students from all of the schools at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. Students also participate in a "Student Research Forum" where they present the results of their summer research activities. This program accepts 25 students each summer.
