Title: Office of Substance Abuse Studies
Description: The mission of the Office of Substance Abuse Studies (OSAS) at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy is to improve programs of substance abuse treatment and prevention and to explore the intersection of substance abuse and pharmacy practice in our society. For over twenty years OSAS has been providing education, research, and service programs in the field of substance abuse for health professionals and the community at large.

OSAS supervises the Student Committee on Drug Abuse Education (SCODAE), which trains pharmacy students in the art of community substance abuse education and offers:

  1. A 5 hour program of school based substance abuse education for 8th, 9th, and 10th grade audiences;
  2. "Inter-Generational Insights" - a program to enhance communication between parents and students on issues of substance abuse relevant to the times
OSAS also supervises the Students Preventing Addiction (SPA), an inter-professional program geared toward increasing the awareness of the risks and consequences of alcohol abuse and the promotion of activities that offer alternatives to alcohol consumption at campus events.
